W. Ralph Singleton served as director of the Blandy Experimental Farm from 1955-1965. His Blandy research facility was set up in cooperation with the Atomic Energy Commission where the effects of nuclear radiation on the growth stages of corn was studied. Singleton studied at Washington College and received a doctorate from Harvard.

He specialized in genetics and plant breeding. He worked for 21 years at the Connecticut Experimental Farm developing sweet corn hybrids.
